Bing and his 17-year-old son, Gary, recorded two songs for Decca on June 23, 1950. "Sam's Song" was the "A" side of a disc and "Play a Simple Melody" filled the "B" side. The disk was labeled as "Gary Crosby and Friend." The disk sold more than a million copies and spent 19 weeks in the pop charts. "Sam's Song" peaked at No. 3 and "Play a Simple Melody" peaked at No. 2. The disc is considered the first double-sided gold record.
